VietNam Shiprepair completed Methanol Fuel Tank Cleaning and gas freeing on the dual-fuel methanol bulk carrier LEM AZALEA (ABS Class) at Ha Long Anchorage, Vietnam. The tanks contained residual methanol after shipyard system trials. The owner requires a Gas Free Certificate before commencing official methanol bunkering for main engine operation.

All work was performed in full compliance with IGF Code, MSC.1/Circ.1621 , IACS recommendations and ABS requirements .

Critical Requirement

Residual methanol and vapors after factory trials prevent safe entry and official bunkering. Gas Free Certificate cannot be issued until atmosphere meets safe limits. Delays directly affect operational schedule and commercial performance.

Executed Process (IGF Code / MSC.1/Circ.1621 compliant)

• Residual methanol drained to minimum level
• Two-stage gas freeing: inert gas purging followed by controlled air introduction
• Portable high-pressure water washing (no fixed tank cleaning system fitted on methanol fuel tanks)
• Washing water containing methanol collected for controlled disposal
• Multi-level atmosphere testing (top / middle / bottom):
  – O₂ ≈ 20.9%
  – Methanol vapor well below 200 ppm
  – LEL = 0%
• Gas Free Certificate issued after final verification
