VietNam Ship Repair Carry Out Plimsoll Mark Replacement
VietNam Ship Repair Carry Out Plimsoll Mark Replacement
Is your bitumen tanker required to renew its Plimsoll Mark (Load Line Mark) due to updated class requirements or changes in trading areas? VietNam Ship Repair provides professional Plimsoll Mark Replacement and Marine Services, recently completing the full renewal of the Plimsoll Mark on a bitumen tanker at Nghi Son Port, Vietnam, under NK Class supervision. The existing mark no longer fully complied with the latest regulatory and operational conditions, making replacement necessary to maintain legal trading status and safety compliance.
The work was executed in strict accordance with IMO Load Line Convention requirements, IACS recommendations and NK Class rules. Our team restored the correct load line marks so the vessel could continue commercial operations without restriction.
VietNam Ship Repair delivers Marine Services at Nghi Son Port – one of the key ports in South Central Vietnam – and across the country, including Ho Chi Minh Port and Anchorage, Dung Quat Port, Hai Phong Port, and Phu My Port – Vung Tau Anchorage, with full capability to support vessels at any port or anchorage nationwide. We operate workshops at Hai Phong Port and Ho Chi Minh Port, the two largest maritime hubs in Vietnam.

What is the Plimsoll Mark and Why Do All Commercial Ships Need It?
The Plimsoll Mark (also known as the Load Line Mark) is the permanent marking on a ship’s side that indicates the maximum safe draft to which the vessel may be loaded under different conditions of freeboard, season and trading zone. It consists of a circle with a horizontal line through the centre, accompanied by additional lines for various water densities and seasonal zones.
All commercial vessels are required to carry a valid Plimsoll Mark under the International Convention on Load Lines (IMO). The mark ensures adequate reserve buoyancy and structural safety, protects against overloading, and is a mandatory condition for classification, flag state certification and port state control clearance. Without a correct and clearly visible Plimsoll Mark, a ship cannot legally trade.
Why Replacement Becomes Necessary
Changes in class society requirements, amendments to freeboard calculations, or shifts in the vessel’s intended trading areas (for example moving between tropical, summer or winter zones) can render the existing Plimsoll Mark non-compliant. In such cases, the mark must be renewed to match the updated Load Line Certificate and current operational profile. Timely Plimsoll Mark Replacement prevents detention risks, maintains insurance validity and ensures uninterrupted commercial operations.
Professional Plimsoll Mark Replacement Process under NK Class
VietNam Ship Repair carried out a controlled renewal process at Nghi Son Port in full compliance with IMO, IACS and NK requirements:
Joint assessment with the NK surveyor to confirm the new required marks and dimensions according to the vessel’s current Load Line Certificate.
Careful removal of the existing Plimsoll Mark plating.
Fabrication of new steel plate to the exact size and shape required.
Precise positioning, welding and fairing by qualified personnel.
Application of the correct load line symbols, letters and seasonal marks in accordance with the Load Line Convention.
Protective coating and final verification.
Attendance by the NK Class surveyor for inspection and endorsement of the renewed mark.
The process restored full regulatory compliance while minimising time alongside.
