Importance of Deck Crane Jib Repairs on Panamax Bulk Carriers
The jib (boom) is the primary lifting arm of deck cranes on Panamax bulk carriers, handling grabs or hooks for cargo such as ore or wood chips. A fracture due to overloading or impact severely compromises lifting capacity and safety. VietNam Shiprepair’s Deck Crane Repairs and Steel Works restore full structural strength, ensuring IACS/IMO compliance and preventing operational downtime.
Steps for Deck Crane Jib Repair
VietNam Shiprepair recently repaired a fractured deck crane jib at Ho Chi Minh Anchorage. Here are the key steps:
-
Erect Safe Staging: Build scaffolding with safety rails, harness attachment points, and fall protection measures to securely access the high-positioned jib.
-
Support and Secure Jib: Install temporary bracing and supports to prevent further deformation during repair.
-
Joint Survey with Class Surveyor: Conduct detailed inspection with NKK surveyor to assess damage and approve replacement plan.
-
Material Selection: Use 10mm AH36 steel plate, matching original specification for strength and corrosion resistance.
-
Cut Out Damaged Section: Remove the fractured portion with precision cutting.
-
Install New Plate: Fit and align the new AH36 plate.
-
Check Alignment: Verify straightness and alignment of the jib.
-
Certified Welding: Perform welding by NKK-certified welders with reinforcement.
-
NDT Inspection: Conduct ultrasonic testing (UT) and penetrant testing (PT) to verify weld quality.
-
Dismantle Staging: Safely remove scaffolding after completion.
-
Load Test: Perform working load test at 30 tons and overload test at 35 tons.
-
Final Verification: Confirm full crane operation under NKK surveyor witness.
This process restores the jib to original strength and safety.
