Importance of Rudder Stock Bearing Replacement on Small Tankers
The upper rudder stock bearing is a critical component in the steering system of small tankers at Cai Mep Port, supporting the rudder stock’s axial and radial loads while allowing smooth rotation. When worn, it causes excessive play, vibration, steering difficulty, and potential rudder damage. Timely Rudder Stock Bearing Replacement by VietNam Shiprepair restores precise control, prevents class detentions, and ensures IACS/IMO compliance.
Step-by-Step Rudder Stock Bearing Replacement Process
VietNam Shiprepair recently replaced the upper rudder stock bearing on a small tanker at Cai Mep Port. Here are the key steps:
-
Preparation: Conduct risk assessment, obtain permit to work, and coordinate with the owner and RINA surveyor. Prepare tools (hydraulic jacks, laser alignment kit, torque wrench, NDT equipment).
-
Secure Rudder: Lock rudder at midship, isolate steering gear, and support rudder blade to prevent movement.
-
Dismount Rudder Stock: Remove rudder coupling bolts, disconnect tiller arm, and lift rudder stock using hydraulic jacks and chain blocks.
-
Remove Old Bearing: Extract the worn upper bearing (self-aligning roller or split type) from the carrier housing.
-
Install New Bearing: Clean housing, measure clearances, and press-fit the new bearing (using induction heater or hydraulic press) with precise alignment checked by laser.
-
Reassemble: Reinstall rudder stock, reconnect tiller arm, and torque bolts to specification.
-
Alignment Check: Verify rudder stock alignment and rudder drop/clearance.
-
Testing & Verification: Perform steering gear test (35° port to starboard), load test if required, and final RINA surveyor witness.
-
Documentation: Issue detailed report with measurements, NDT results, and RINA approval.
This process ensures full steering reliability under tight time constraints.
